Nine players out of contract June 2015

Just looking at the player info in the current players forum, and it looks like we have numerous players out of contract at the end of this season. If correct these players need a new deal or leave on a bosman:

Ryan Bennett

Wes Hoolahan

Michael Turner

Andrew Surman

Alex Tettey

Declan Rudd

Mark Bunn

Anthony Pilkington

Javier Garrido (we have a one year option).

Could some of our most important signings this season already be in the squad? Would have thought tying down £3.2m Ryan Bennett would be a priority, impressed at times last season and best years yet to come. Declan Rudd as well, will be 24 in January so no compensation if he left in the summer.

The centre back situation seems particularly concerning, with Bassong in the Norwich bomb squad, Turner and Bennett both on the last year of their deals, and question marks over Russell Martin in the centre.

Makes you wonder how vital this year might be. How many of those players might start to think about turning down new contracts if we're not looking like we're upto much?

It is possible that we have one year options on some that we don't know about.

Nobody knew that we had a one year option on Michael Turner until Adams said that Fox and Nash were the only two out of contract.

Tettey, Turner and Pilkington are definitely out of contract though, as their one year option was exercised this summer.

It works both ways though, if we're not looking up to much, how much of it will be down to some of these players?

Big season ahead for all of us.

True Warren Hill, if we have a bad season then we may welcome the opportunity to get some of them off the wage bill.

IMO, Adams wanted to see how the pre-season panned out before offering new contracts. I therefore think contract negotiations will start very soon.

Other than the centre backs I wouldn't be too worried about this. Pilks I doubt will be here at the end of the month, Garrido can either be released or optioned depending on how much he plays, Bunn will leave on a free if he doesn't go before then, and Wes will leave if we go up and has no residual value anyway. Tettey seems to want away so again may be replaced before the contract expires. Turner I think we need to be prepared to lose on a free if we don't go up, if he was up for signing a new contract he'd probably have done so by now. Bennett and Rudd are the two we really need to get to sign ASAP, but other than those two I'm not really that concerned. It's all part of the game - occasionally we'll lose players on a free, occasionally we'll gain them on a free. It's not as if we're in a position to lose any talismanic or extremely valuable players for nothing.

I agree that Bennett and Rudd should be the priorities, two players with their best years ahead of them. Shame about Tettey, his agent did make it sound like he would be off at the end of his contract, hopefully he can play a role in our promotion so that he leaves with our goodwill and best wishes.

If we're in the promotion places in January, Tettey might consider signing a new deal with us. I think at the moment his head has been turned by this supposed interest from the Prem, but if we don't accept the offer and he stays with us, by January we may well be his best option if we're looking good for a quick return. Why risk signing a pre-contract with a bottom-half Prem team when they might be relegated while we were promoted?

IMO, we'll start to see new contracts being negotiated soon. Tettey may be the exception, in which case the 'January Option' may kick in.
